Brooklyn teen being hailed as a hero

Published: August 23, 2006

Yaneisha Harrison is just 18-years-old and she is a true hero. When a fire broke out in her apartment building Monday, she wasted no time and repeatedly ran into the burning building to rescue her family trapped inside.

The family who lives in the house say they cannot believe anyone survived the fire. Now, they are giving all the credit to the teen girl.

Harrison still cannot believe she is standing here with all her cousins after a fire in their East Flatbush home.

“It was pretty smokey up in there. I know what I was doing because I know the house pretty well,” she said.

Harrison was sleeping, along with her five cousins when the fire started around 9 yesterday morning. Thankfully, all five of the children were on the first floor with Harrison.

But Harrison didn’t just go back in once, she went into the burning home three times to get all five children out.

“I was thinking what was going to happen … how are we going to get of the house,” a survivor said.

We also spoke with the children’s father, who also escaped from the fire, but couldn’t get back in to help save his children.

“I just calling my sons names, you know … wake up, wake up … there is smoke inside … they already came out,” he said.

But he didn’t find that out until later when he found his children at a neighbor’s home.

“To see the kids is like, I don’t know about this,” he said.

The family doesn’t have much materially, but they do have each other thanks to one brave teenage girl.

The FDNY says the cause of this fire is still under investigation, but they do believe it is accidental.

As for the family, they are being cared for by the Red Cross. They will stay in a nearby hotel for the next two days, but family and fire officials say it could take six months for the family to return to the house.
