Monthly food pantry created for families

Published: August 22, 2006

Paris Christian Center Church has created a monthly food pantry for the underprivileged and working poor families of the Red River Valley.

Food for the Hungry Inc., a Texas non-profit corporation, is a nondenominational organization dedicated to providing grocery relief and support to communities located in Lamar County.

The program began in May 2006 with 30 Paris families and has grown to serve hundreds of people every month across Northeast Texas. Food for the Hungry crosses denominational lines, and the organization spreads the good news of the Gospel of Christ through tracts and information that is placed with each food box.

Food for the Hungry’s supply partners include Angel Food Ministries, Red River Food Bank, local grocery retailers, food manufacturers and other individuals.

Food boxes contain approximately $85 worth of grocery items. The boxes may be sold to needy families for $25, if they can afford it, or the boxes may be acquired by donations from individuals or organizations supporting the ministry for $25 per box.

Each box affords an underprivileged person or family a number of balanced, nutritional meals, consisting of “restaurant grade” meats, frozen vegetables, fruits and dairy products acquired through the group’s suppliers, with only the best and highest quality “name brand” foods. Each box contains enough food to support a family of four person for approximately two weeks, or a senior citizen for one month.

“There are no applications for qualification to order food from Food for the Hungry,” said Bob Stewart, pastor of Paris Christian Center. “Food sales and the distribution of food is handled by our volunteers, who come from local churches and other persons in the community who have a heart to help those less privileged.”

“Payments for food boxes are collected during the first part of each month,” Stewart added. “The money is passed on to our food suppliers, who require a payment at mid-month. Several days later, in that same month, the food boxes are picked up by our volunteers for distribution.”
