Lobster rescues wallet for drunk

Published: August 21, 2006

A drunken swimmer who lost his wallet on a late-night dip in the sea had it returned – after it was found in the claws of a lobster.

Paul Westlake, 30, thought he had lost his wallet for good after it slipped out of his pocket during the swim.

But a few days later it was found by a deep sea diver … in the clutches of a lobster on the ocean floor.

The diver found a business card belonging to MrWestlake’s hairdresser inside and handed the wallet back to the salon – complete with several large claw marks.

They were then able to reunite Mr Westlake with his wallet, which included a St Christopher’s medallion given to him by a friend’s daughter.

Mr Westlake, of Milehouse, Plymouth, said he wanted to meet and thank the mystery diver.

He added: ‘I was gobsmacked when they told me where it had ended up.

‘I’d love to shake the diver’s hand because there were little gifts inside that were important to me.’

He said he had gone for the swim in Plymouth Sound with his brother Paul, 31, after drinking in a local pub.

‘My brother dived in and, like an idiot, I followed him,’ he added.
