Two heroes honored

Published: August 9, 2006

Two Valley police officers were given a tremendous honor for their courage and dedication.

Former Guntersville Sergeant Tommy Bishop and Lieutenant Sedric Clark each received a purple heart Monday night. The ceremony took place at Guntersville City’s Council meeting.

Bishop still has a bullet with him and Clark says he’s back at 100 percent.

“I used to always tell my mom before I got into this job that I didn’t want to get hurt, I didn’t want to get killed, but if it does happen, it happened with me doing something that I loved to do,” said Clark.

Two men, two heroes, were honored Monday night with the purple heart.

Those injured in the line of duty doing what they loved best. May first, Lieutenant Sedric Clark, was shot during a traffic stop. The bullet hit just to the left of his vest.

“I’m not afraid to die, but I’m just not ready to go. The first thing I thought of was my wife,” said Clark.

Clark suffered a collapsed lung and other injuries.

“I just have to say God and he answered my prayers when I went to that emergency room,” said Clark’s mom Patricia Clark.

He would later recover and just three weeks ago he was back at full speed.

Now receiving an honor that says you are recognized and appreciated.

“I never really expected a pat on the back for what I do and this is probably the biggest pat on the back I ever gotten,” said Clark.

13 years ago, while responding to a domestic call, Sergeant Tommy Bishop was shot.

It left him paralyzed but he wasn’t ready to say goodbye.

“He said sergeant, I’m sure you are going to make it and he laughed at him and that’s was about an hour after it happened,” said Ryan Bradford, the responding officer.

The ceremony was a reminder to perhaps say thank you a little more often.

“If you get a chance, of course it’s hard to do when someone is writing you a ticket or anything such as that…the police fire public servant say I appreciated, you’d be surprised at far it would go,” Martin Killion, former Guntersville Police Officer

The man accused of shooting Clark, Favian Flores, faces attempted murder charges.

The man responsible for Bishop’s injuries in 1993 is Cecil Looney. He was convicted and is serving his sentence in a correctional facility.
