Hair today, gone tomorrow

Published: August 8, 2006

It was a hair-raising experience, and all for a good cause.

Four technicians from Supercuts in Redlands came to Thompson Elementary School Wednesday, July 26, to gather braids of hair for Locks of Love, which provides human hair wigs for those with disease who have lost their own hair.

The mass clipping was initiated by fourth grader Celeste Marquez and her third grade sister, Daisy, who wanted to donate their hair in honor of Thompson Elementary teacher Lisa Antillon, who passed away from a brain tumor last year.

They wanted to make the donation at the school.

“Like any good leader, I turned it over to Vice Principal Kathy Wade,” joked Principal Chris Tickell, “and she ran with it.”

By the time Supercuts technicians arrived, there were 14 students waiting to donate hair.

It was special in another way for Redlands Supercuts Manager Leann Leverette and Melissa Stallings, who had attended Thompson Elementary School.

Students donating hair Tuesday, in addition to Celeste and Daisy, were Maryline Jofre, Meyline Jofre, Raquel Whisner, Shannon King, Valeria Pech, Lizbeth Mellado, Brittney Sewell, Kaley L. King, Bethany Martinez, Nicole Avila, Kelsie Ryser and Devyree Carillo.

Donating earlier were Isaac Cacho, Bridget Almos and Sarah Hundley.
