Friends rescue man in house fire

Published: August 4, 2006

A 35-year-old man suffered smoke inhalation Thursday evening when a fire broke out at his East Side home, an official said Friday.
The fire, which caused an estimated $50,000 in damage, left the home where the man lived with a woman and child uninhabitable, said Capt. Paul McDonough, a Tucson Fire Department spokesman.

Two of the man’s friends arrived at the home in the 8400 block of East Marlena Circle, near East Wrightstown Road and North Camino Seco, about 7:20 p.m., to work on the air conditioner, McDonough said.

The men saw smoke coming from the residence and immediately went inside to pull the man out, McDonough said.
When firefighters arrived at the scene, the man was laying in the front yard and was having difficulty breathing, he said.
He was taken to a hospital for treatment but his condition was unknown Friday, McDonough said.

The Tucson Fire Department advises against anyone entering or re-entering a burning building, McDonough said.

“We do not advocate anyone entering a house that is on fire,” McDonough said. “What they did gave that man the best chance of survival, but instead of having one victim, we could have had three.”

The woman and child who also lived at the house were not at home when the fire occurred.

The cause of the fire is under investigation and the Red Cross has been contacted to assist the residents, McDonough said.
