Sisters reunited after 55 years

Published: August 3, 2006

Two sisters have been reunited after an incredible 55 years apart.

Augusta Helena Voller and Eva Van Bienen lost touch with each other after moving to different parts of the country.

But five decades on they were finally brought back together after Augusta’s children tracked down Eva.

Augusta, 86, from Copnor, Portsmouth, said: ‘Meeting her after all these years was brilliant, really emotional. It felt as if it was only yesterday that we last saw each other.

‘We wear the same clothes, we eat and do the same things it’s just fantastic to finally be with her.’

Born to a Dutch father and a South African mother, the sisters were born in London and had a very happy childhood together.

They experienced the Second World War together, but after the war the sisters separated when Eva went to live with her father in Birmingham.

Addresses were lost and the pair simply drifted apart.

While Augusta worked at St Mary’s Hospital, Milton, Portsmouth, Eva was working in social counselling, going to church and regularly travelling abroad.

It wasn’t until recently that Augusta heard news about Eva’s whereabouts, thanks to son Peter and daughter Patricia tracking her down.

Augusta recently travelled to Birmingham to meet Eva, where they shared hugs and many tears in an emotional reunion.

Eva, 85, has also come to stay with Augusta at her home and will be re-visiting at Christmas time – their first together for five decades.

Augusta added: ‘I am completely overjoyed. When we met there were cuddles, tears, everything.’
