Crash-land pilot’s miracle escape
Published: August 1, 2006
A PILOT had a miraculous escape today when his light plane crash-landed on a hillside, flipped over and broke in two.
Incredibly, he walked away from the wreckage unhurt.
The man had taken off from Cumbernauld Airport at 8.45am heading for Perth when the Cessna 152 developed an engine problem. The pilot – who was flying solo – was forced to land in the Ochil hills.
A spokesman for Central Police said: “The pilot made an emergency landing north of Tillicoultry in Clackmannanshire.
“He contacted us and had begun making his way off the hill as officers were heading up to meet him.”
The plane was upside down in two pieces.
Aviation writer Jim Ferguson today said the pilot was lucky to survive.
He added: “If you are landing you would be doing up to 60mph.
“It’s very unusual for the plane to break up. He must have hit the hill very hard and would have been lucky to be alive.”
