Puppy in danger becomes family’s ‘Angel’

A puppy caught in a storm drain 12 days ago met her rescuers Thursday at the Seguin Fire Department substation on Hwy. 46.
Angel, a 4-month-old boxer mix puppy, was brought by her adopted family to meet the firefighters who saved her life.
Seguin firefighter and paramedic Daryl Kyle said police were called out July 9 to the Early Bird Apartments at 1360 C.H. Matthies Drive for a dog stuck in a drainage pipe.
When police arrived, they called firefighters for assistance.
Firefighters opened two storm drains, and after a few tries, got the frightened puppy to come out of the pipe.
The puppy’s next stop was the Seguin Animal Shelter.
Firefighter Remy DeLatorre said Angel was traumatized when rescuers took her out of the storm drain.
“She was timid, she couldn’t walk,” DeLatorre said.
Once she was rescued, there was a possibility that Angel could have been put to sleep if no one claimed her.
But Blanche Walker, a volunteer at the animal shelter, showed a picture of Angel to her good friend, Eunice Harrison.
Last week, Harrison, with her grandson Vincent Carter, 10, went to the shelter to see Angel. Angel made a good first impression on the family and they decided to adopt her on the spot.
“As soon as we looked into her little brown eyes, we said, ‘She is going home with us,’” Harrison said.
Harrison’s husband, Randy, was hesitant about adopting a puppy, but once Eunice showed him the picture of Angel, he could not resist.
“She pulled a dirty trick on me,” Randy Harrison said about his wife. “She showed me a picture of her. How can you turn down a puppy? You can’t.”
Grandparents and grandson have so far enjoyed the company and happiness Angel has brought to their home. Last year, the Harrisons lost their boxer to a rattlesnake.
“She is like the perfect dog,” Carter said. “In other words, there is no dog that can match it because she is a very good dog. She is good to play with and easy to walk on a leash. She is anything a dog owner could wish for.”
“And she loves you unconditionally,” added Eunice Harrison.
Kyle is glad that the scared puppy they rescued a week and a half ago was able to find a loving family.
“This is a great animal,” Kyle said. “No one wanted her a week ago, but now look at her. She is happy.”
