Man rescues woman from burning vehicle

A 73-year-old woman was pulled from her burning truck by a passerby after the truck crashed and burst into flames Thursday afternoon.

Betty Weyenberg of Wiseman was injured and trapped in her truck after it ran off the road and hit a tree at on State Highway 177 at the Izard County line at around 12:42 p.m. Thursday.

Weyenberg was taken to Baxter Regional Medical Center. A nursing official at BRMC said she was still being evaluated late Thursday afternoon.

Weyenberg suffered severe burns on her legs and stomach, according to a firefighter at the scene.

The extent of the injuries to the young man who rescued her was not known, but he did suffer burns, according to witnesses.

The unidentified man was taken to a hospital in Calico Rock, but an Arkansas State Police report did provide his name or condition report.

Weyenberg’s 1995 Ford Ranger was headed north on Highway 177 when Weyenberg lost control of the truck, according to a report by ASP Trooper Gus Moore. The truck left the road, hit the tree and caught fire.

Agencies responding in addition to state police were the Baxter County Sheriff’s Office, Izard County Sheriff’s Department, a BRMC ambulance, a Izard County ambulance and the Rodney, Pineville, and Calico Rock fire departments.
