Mum and baby in miracle escape

Published: July 13, 2006

A WOMAN and a baby are among those who are lucky to be alive after a large part of a tree fell onto two cars on a busy road.

A section of the tree fell into the carriageway at Higher Blandford Road, Broadstone, just before the evening rush hour on Wednesday. It struck a Ford Focus carrying a woman and her baby and a Renault Laguna driven by 25-year-old firefighter David Welstead.

Fire crews administered first aid and oxygen therapy to them, but no one was taken to hospital.

The mother was said to be suffering shock after the tree crushed the window of her car.

Mr Welstead, from Corfe Mullen, was driving into Broadstone to pay for a holiday when the accident happened.

“I was driving along Higher Blandford Road towards Broadstone and saw out of the corner of my eye a tree coming down and I just rammed my brakes on,” he said.

“It came down on my car and smashed the windscreen. A few passers-by were crying out: Are you all right?’”

He was unable to open his car door and had to climb out of the window.

“Another six feet forward and I don’t think I would have got out,” he said.

“I feel a bit lucky to be alive.”

Fire crews from Poole and Hamworthy attended the scene at 4.24pm.

The tree completely blocked the road, causing major traffic hold-ups in the surrounding area as commuter traffic built up.
