Officers to shave heads

Published: July 11, 2006

Members of the Marion County Sheriff’s Office will shave their heads Thursday in support of a co-worker’s daughter who is undergoing treatment for leukemia.

“Crop-A-Cop” is scheduled for noon on the front steps of the Marion County Courthouse, 100 High St. NE, and at 2:30 p.m. at the Marion County jail, 4000 Aumsville Highway SE.

The public is invited, Deputy Kevin Rau said.

All donations will be forwarded to Doernbecher Children’s Hospital in Portland.

The Crop-A-Cop event gained significance for the sheriff’s office on May 11, when Madison “Maddie” Melgard, 7, the daughter of Sgt. Chris Melgard and Laurie Phelps, was diagnosed with leukemia.

The treatment causes her hair to fall out.
