A Sparks man credited divine intervention for escaping a Thursday fire in his truck after propane tanks ignited.

“I guess God was looking out for me,” Ray White said as Sparks firefighters extinguished the flames. “He always does.” [Grace Plus Nothing]

The fire as reported about 11:20 a.m. as White was driving south on 21st Street near the intersection of Prater Way.

Fire Chief Frank Frievalt said no one was injured, but the cause of ignition was not known.

In nearby Jopa Trailer Park, firefighters found one of the tanks that apparently flew off the truck during the fire.

White said flames initially reached 30 feet. He had left his asphalt job and was on his way to buy refreshments for his crew when he saw people outside the trailer park waving at him.

“I thought I had something dragging,” he said. “Then I saw the truck was on fire.”

White went into Nevada Motorcycle Specialities and asked employees to call 911. The employees then tried to extinguish the flames themselves, but retreated when the flames became too high, he said.

Streets around the fire were closed as firefighters worked to extinguish the flames and clean up the leaking propane.

“I got lucky,” White said.

The truck, which belonged to co-workers, was severely damaged. White walked back to work.
