Patriotic dog can take a bow, wow!
Published: July 5, 2006
For the nation’s birthday, people show their patriotism in all kinds of ways: fireworks, flags and parades.
Add pooches to the mix.
A Lake Stevens hairdresser has done up her dog in a look that would make Betsy Ross proud.
Tanner, a 6-year-old Maltese, stood patiently on a kitchen counter Thursday as Alicia Adams used cotton balls to apply dye, transforming the white dog into a Yankee poodle dandy.
“He’s doing one for the boys,” Adams said. “We’re supporting our troops.”
After the coloring session, the 10-pound, foot-long fluff ball proudly sported a blue head and red stripes along his legs and back.
When she takes him for walks around the neighborhood, Adams said, people stop their cars to take a closer look at the painted pup.
July 4 isn’t the first time she’s seen fit to use Tanner’s hair as a canvas.
For Easter, she painted him in bright colors. On Halloween, she painted his body orange, his tail green.
“God, in all his wisdom, gave me a white dog,” she said.
She once tried to paint him like a panda, but the coloring effort failed when Tanner shook his ears, spreading black dye to make him look more like a baseball umpire than a panda.
People sometimes wonder whether the dye might hurt Tanner, Adams said. Not to worry, she tells them; she uses edible food coloring for her palette.
“Everyone goes, ‘You’ve got too much time on your hands,’ ” she said.
She laughs off the criticism and says she’s doing important work.
“I make people smile and laugh.”
