Dog Alerts Family To Burning Home
Published: July 5, 2006
A Columbus, Ohio, couple is without a home after flames ripped through their house Tuesday morning.
The blaze broke out at about 1:45 a.m. at a home on Brownleaf Drive.
Investigators said the smoke detectors in the home did not alarm and the family’s 8-month-old bull terrier, Harley, alerted the residents.
“He was barking, and I got up and went to the bathroom and looked out, and I saw this glow. I went around the corner, and he’s barking in the dining room, and my house was on fire on the outside. So, I don’t know what happened,” said Michael Copeland, homeowner.
The couple was able to escape, but the dog stayed inside, hiding under the couple’s bed.
Firefighters were able to rescue the dog a short time later. He was not injured.
“We found the dog, got some oxygen on him and the family is taking the dog to a 24-hour animal hospital,” said Chief Bill Balthaser of the Columbus Division of Fire.
Investigators said they believe the fire started in the dining room on the outside of the house — possibly the result of fireworks.
