Biker reunited with his ‘guardian angel’

Published: July 5, 2006

CRASH victim Jim McGarry has had an emotional meeting with the “guardian angel” nurse who helped save his life - thanks to his appeal in the News.

Jim crashed into a telegraph pole after his motorbike slipped on a patch of oil when he was part of a four-bike convoy on the B1040 at Abbotsley.

But when Jim came around, the mystery nurse was tending him - she kept him calm, wrapped him in blankets and waited 45 minutes with him before ambulance crews took over.

The father-of-two had suffered a punctured lung and broke four ribs, his shoulder and collar bone in the accident at 9.45pm on Tuesday, June 6.

The nurse was passing by chance and put her expertise into action before Jim was taken to Addenbrooke’s Hospital.

He later contacted the Newswith a plea to help find the nurse so he could thank her in person.

And there was an emotional reunion when Clare Springett, an intensive care nurse at Hinchingbrooke Hositpal, visited Jim at his home in Buryhill, Potton, yesterday (Tuesday, 04 July) after a friend of hers spotted the News’ article.

Clare, 21, from St Neots, said: “We had gone out for a drink that evening and we came across the accident. I said to my boyfriend that we’d better stop.

“I’ll be qualified a year in September and I went into autopilot mode. I was calming him down because he could not breathe and telling people to bring blankets.

“I found that he had a punctured lung and I stayed with Jim until the ambulance was ready to go.

“It was very nice to meet him again today (Wednesday, 05 July).”

Jim said: “It was fantastic to meet her.

Words cannot describe it.”

And he thanked the Newsfor bringing them together.

He said: “I am very thankful.”

His days on a motorbike have to come to an end. He said the accident was “his first and last” in 20 years on two wheels.

The 39-year-old lorry driver is now recovering at home with his partner Tammy and hopes to start physiotherapy soon.
