Worker hero saves boy

A boating assistant jumped into Peasholm Park lake to rescue a boy who was struggling beneath the water after falling from a pedalo.
The teenager had fallen into the lake from a Dragon pedalo after a female passenger stepped out, tipping the boat, it was revealed today.
David Williams, who has worked at Peasholm Park for two years, dived into the recently-dredged lake fully-clothed when he realised the boy was panicking and had started to slip under the water.
The boy was about 15 years old.
Mr Williams, 24, of Devonshire Drive, Scarborough, said: “He had started to panic and go under the water.
“So I jumped in, swam over to him and grabbed him.”
Mr Williams helped the boy to the side of the lake, where he was given a towel to dry off and keep warm.
The woman who was with the boy was very appreciative. She thanked Mr Williams for his prompt response.
Mr Williams said: “I just went into automatic pilot. I could see he was struggling so I jumped in and grabbed him.”
Senior staff supervisor Mike Pattison said they were all very proud of him. He said: “There were quite a lot of people who saw what David did and they were all very proud of him too.
“David has said to us that he just did what he had to do. But we all know not everyone would have done what he did.”
He added: “We’re just very pleased the young lad is all right.”
Mr Williams said he had no aspirations to become a lifeguard but friends and colleagues have encouraged him to think about it.
It was not known if the rescued teenager was local or a holidaymaker.
