Survivor, rescuer reunited

Published: July 4, 2006

One woman remembers every detail, while the other has nothing but a snapshot of a crumpled car, some physical scars and her very life to remind her of that day.

Yesterday, both women — one who survived a crash and the other who saved her — met for the first time since fate brought them together last year.

Last time they met, Angela Normand gave Alice ‘June’ Brooks the breath of life.

But the second time, she was breathing a sigh of relief — thrilled to meet the woman she brought back to life after a two-car wreck on Hwy. 1 near Conrich last July 1.

“I’ve thought a lot about you for the last year … I’ll never forget when you opened your eyes and took your first breath,” Normand said yesterday when she met Brooks again, for the first time since the crash.

Police said the accident happened when the grandmother of seven pulled into oncoming traffic.

Normand pulled up in time to help other Good Samaritans pull her from the car and on to the ground, where she nervously performed CPR, reviving Brooks.

Normand said a last-minute plan to take her kids for ice cream put her on the road that day.

“I wasn’t even supposed to be there,” she said.

RCMP have said Normand’s actions saved the woman’s life — something the 30-year-old mother of three didn’t know until last week.

Brooks said the only thing she remembers of that day was heading out to visit her son and grandkids then waking up in Foothills hospital where she spent three months.

Today, the 77-year-old has a scar from 32 stitches on her leg, a few less teeth and some short-term memory problems, but is otherwise back up to speed physically and happy to be alive.

“I have no memory of the accident and it is just as well,” said Brooks, adding she had a stroke after the crash and suspects a minor one may have caused it.
