12 receive special education awards

Twelve area young people recently received various awards from the East Central Ohio Special Educational Regional Resource Center during its 21st annual awards program.
The district encompasses 10 counties, according to Director James Martinek, and each school district in that 10-county area can nominate one excellent special education student. Some award recipients are recent graduates and some are still in high school, but they had to be enrolled at the time of their nomination. Each recipient received a plaque and a trophy.
The award winners are as follows:
Bryanna Baker is the daughter of Jeff and Linn Mahaffey of New Philadelphia and received an award for outstanding achievement in academics. She is a graduate of Claymont High at Uhrichsville, where she was ranked 38th out of 181 students, was consistently on the honor roll and was a four-year member of the concert, marching and pep bands.
Kevin Brestle is the son of Barney and Evelyn Tatro of Coshocton and received an award for outstanding achievement in community service. He attends Coshocton City Schools and volunteers in the pre-school classroom.
Joseph Corpman is the son of Bill and Robin Corpman of Port Washington and received an award for outstanding achievement in community service. He is a students at Indian Valley High at Gnadenhutten and volunteered nearly 190 hours of community service during the past school year through his affiliation with the Indian Valley FFA. He worked with the Forest Heritage Festival, Share-A-Christmas and other worthwhile causes.
Justin Davia is the son of William and Reva Davia of Cadiz and received an award for outstanding achievement in employment. He attends the Harrison Career Center at Cadiz and is a resident of the Harrison Hills School District. He distinguished himself in the business operations program at HCC. He was recognized for his success in two job placements, first with Kroger Grocery and now with Franciscan University of Steubenville.
John Evans is the son of Brenda Smith of Carrollton and received an award for outstanding achievement in employment. He attends Carroll Hills School at Carrollton. He has part-time employment at four businesses in Carrollton, Canton and Massillon, all while working on four additional job-preparation programs at Carroll Hills.
Susan Howard of Carrollton is a graduate of Carrollton Exempted Village Schools and received an award for outstanding achievement in community service. She volunteered in the library coffee shop and a local day care center. She also served as an aide in the school library.
Jeannie Jones is the daughter of Michael and Debra Jones of New Philadelphia and received an award for outstanding achievement in academics. A graduate of New Philadelphia High, she increased her grade point average by hard work, comprehension strategies and note-taking strategies. She is continuing her education in college this fall.
Eric Kandel is the son of Wes and Kathy Kandel of Berlin and received an award for outstanding achievement in academics. He is an East Holmes School District student who greatly improved his math skills by working as cashier of the Classroom Cafe. He uses an AlphaSmart keyboard to aid him in writing as well.
Erin Muzechuk is the daughter of Cindy Rose of New Philadelphia and Thomas Muzechuk, also of New Philadelphia. She is a graduate of Buckeye Career Center at New Philadelphia and received an award for outstanding achievement in community service. She began donating her hair to Locks of Love at age 13 and at age 17 began donating blood. In the last two years, she has donated 13 pints.
John Ohse Jr. is the son of John and Tracy Ohse of Killbuck and received an award for outstanding achievement in independent living skills. He is a student in the West Holmes School District and has learned how to create happiness and joy in himself and others.
Amy Prysi is the daughter of Wanda Conwell of Strasburg and received an award for outstanding achievement in academics. She is a Strasburg High student who overcame reading difficulties to be ranked 12th in her class. She plans to enroll in the diversified health program at Buckeye Career Center this fall.
Seth Sturgeon is the son of John and Virginia Oldaker of Warsaw and received an award for outstanding achievement in community service. He is a student of the River View School district. He is a three-year volunteer for the High Hopes Therapeutic Riding Center. He recently was named the center’s 2005 co-volunteer of the year for volunteering more than 140 hours of service to the program.
