Girl gets hair cut to help others
Published: June 15, 2006
Catherine Andrews has gotten her hair cut for Locks of Love three times, once every two years.
That’s not bad considering she’s a fifth-grader at Madeira Middle School.
Her most recent clippings went to Locks of Love at the end of last month.
Andrews, 11, gave her hair to the group so it can be made into hairpieces for financially disadvantaged children under 18 with long-term medical hair loss.
“I didn’t want to just give my hair to the garbage can,” Andrews said.
Most of the children who get hairpieces through Locks of Love have alopecia areata, a hair-loss condition that has no known cause or cure.
Locks of Love estimates that 80 percent of the hair it receives comes from children. The hairpieces it donates to children start at $3,000 retail.
Andrews got her hair cut at Great Clips in Madeira. Hair being donated to Locks of Love is cut for free there.
Judy Andrews, her mother, said she heard about Locks of Love when her daughter was about 7 years old.
“I said to her, ‘You have a lot of hair. If you want it cut short, would this be a good thing to do?’ She thought it was.”
She said her daughter seemed shocked hearing about what some children go through.
“She couldn’t imagine being a child and not having hair.”
Andrews is looking forward to donating her hair again — with mom’s permission, of course.
“I’ve been doing it every two years, so maybe I’ll cut it in another two years if my mom will let me, which I think she will.”
But until then, she hopes her recent donation makes a difference.
“Whoever gets my hair, I hope they’re really happy,” she said.
