Orphaned monkeys from Africa find home in Texas zoo
Published: June 12, 2006
Six baby primates separated from their mothers by hunters in Central Africa have found new homes at the San Antonio Zoo.
The four black mangabee monkeys and two Wolf’s guenons were brought to the United States by a 400-thousand dollar rescue operation coordinated by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums.
American zoo officials learned of the monkeys a year ago, when they were among 33 orphan baby monkeys for sale at a market in the Congo.
Their mothers had been killed for food in the illegal meat trade, and the babies were taken away for sale to pet brokers.
The 33 monkeys were placed at six zoos around the United States. Officials say the San Antonio Zoo contributed 75-thousand dollars to the rescue.
The year-long rescue included different stages of quarantine to ensure the animals were not carrying any diseases that could threaten humans or other animals.
