Dog rescued in the nick of time
Published: June 9, 2006
The (formerly) “uncatchable Gateway dog” was finally captured two months ago by Animal Welfare workers. A week later she gave birth to nine puppies.
The dog was a common sight at the Gateway shopping centre and on the R43 into Hermanus, often causing chaos when crossing the road between the mountain and the shopping centre.
For close on three years the Hermanus Animal Welfare (HAW) received phone-calls from concerned citizens, but no one ever managed to catch her.
But two months ago, Marius Boucher and James Siyeka of HAW did just that. With great difficulty and much running around, the pair cornered the heavily pregnant hound and coerced her into their vehicle.
When they realised that puppies were imminent, they took her to the Hermanus Animal Hospital (HAH). Vet Sandy Waddingham agreed to take over as the HAH is equipped to look after nursing mothers and just-born litters.
The bad news is that two pups didn’t make it; the good news is that five have found homes.
This leaves mom and two daughters in need of your help. The mother is approximately three years old and will be spayed before being adopted.
