Man buried under soil, rescued

RAM Kesh, a 35-year-old labourer, was today was today buried 16-feet under the soil on the Sector 55-56 dividing road. He was working on a sewerage pipeline when the ground on the sides of the trench caved. However, he was saved by the shopkeepers of the area and immediately rushed to the hospital. He received some minor injuries and was discharged from the hospital.
The incident occurred around 10.30 am when Ram Kesh was laying a sewerage pipe in the trench. People who were working with him saw him getting buried under the soil. An alarm was raised immediately.
A shopkeeper, Jagdish Kumar, who heard the noise, came out of his shop and jumped in the trench along with his shop attendants. Meanwhile, the JCB machine, which was parked nearby, was called for help.
‘‘It was a timely collective effort of 7-8 persons who managed to save Ram Kesh’s life and bring him out of the trench. While they were getting him out of the ditch he received some injuries. He is safe now and the doctors have declared him fit,’’ said Inspector Nanha Ram, SHO, Police Station-39. meanwhile, police have booked Avinash Jain, the contractor who was hired to do the job, on Ram Kesh’s complaint. Jain had not provided any equipment for the safety of his labourers. A case under Section 337 (Negligent Act) was registered against him. He was arrested on the charges and later released on bail.
Public Health Department officer Amarjit Singh, who reached the spot, said, ‘‘I am new to this place. I got transferred to this post recently. I don’t know much about the safety measures. I think it was the responsibility of the contractor to provide safety measures.’’
