Doctors announce heart pump breakthrough
Published: May 29, 2006
Experts claimed yesterday to have developed a heart pump that does not require invasive surgery.
The technique, developed by researchers at Brunel University’s Institute for Bioengineering and London’s Royal Brompton Hospital, involves mounting the pump into a stent and delivering it to the heart on a deflated balloon.
The balloon is inflated to put the stent and pump in place and the balloon is then withdrawn.
Deaths in one in five men and around one in six women were caused by heart disease in 2005, according to recent figures from the Office for National Statistics.
