New York Heart Surgeon Hailed As Hero
Published: May 27, 2006
A New York cardiologist is being hailed as a hero for stopping to donate blood to one of his patients during surgery.
Doctor Samuel Weinstein of Chappaqua is chief of pediatric cardio-thoracic surgery at Montefiore Medical Center’s Children’s Hospital.
On May 11th, he was in El Salvador, performing a delicate heart operation on an eight-year-old boy when the boy began bleeding heavily. The only way to save him was through a blood transfusion, but had a rare blood type, B-negative, which happened to be the doctor’s blood type.
Weinstein immediately walked away from the operating table and donated his own blood for the transfusion.
The rest of the surgery was a success.
