Dog saves Santa Cruz man from house fire

A dog woke up his sleeping owner just in time to escape a soaring two-alarm fire that caused an estimated $500,000 in damage to a $1.1 million two-story home in Santa Cruz early this morning.
The Santa Cruz Fire Department received a call of a `red glow` above the area of Escalona Drive and Bay Street around 3:26 a.m., the department reported today.
When firefighters arrived, the flames has spread and fully engulfed the roof and attic on the second floor of the large split-level house.
With flames scorching live power lines into arcs that threatened to tumble down on top of the home, firefighters attacked the second-floor blaze using both ground and aerial equipment. Sheetrock ceilings were removed to reach the attic fire and a helicopter was used to douse the flames and provide access to the roof.
Thirty-four firefighters fought for about an hour to knock down the blaze.
Teams from the fire departments of Santa Cruz, Scotts Valley, Aptos, Central and the University of California at Santa Cruz helped save the first-floor from damage. Santa Cruz police, the Salvation Army and Pacific Gas and Electric Co. provided assistance.
No one was injured in the accidental fire, which remains under investigation. The tenant and his dog fled to safety before firefighters arrived.
