Child Struck By Car Expected To Recover

An 8-year-old girl from Jacksonville remained in the hospital Wednesday after being hit by a car while riding her bike on the Westside.
The incident occurred Tuesday evening on Normandy Boulevard near the intersection of Maple Grove Road, when, according to police, Sharolynn Macik rode her bike into the path of an oncoming car.
Authorities said the girl was not wearing a helmet at the time of the collision and had to be rushed to Shands-Jacksonville Medical Center.
The driver of the car, Barbara Boone, 52, was not injured, and there was no indication that she would be cited in the accident.
Gary Macik, Sharolynn’s grandfather and caretaker, said when the girl was born they considered her a miracle baby.
“She’s our miracle baby,” Macik said. “We were told by the doctors she wouldn’t make it 24 hours.”
Sharolynn was born with meningitis. Her family said she stayed in the hospital for months and was later diagnosed as an autistic child.
“I love her and she’s my granddaughter. She’s also the daughter we never had,” Macik said.
Like any parent, Macik said Tuesday’s incident was not the first time Sharolynn has gotten out of his sight
“I finished cutting a section of the yard, and when I turned around she wasn’t there,” Macik said.
Sharolynn had taken her bike and rode to a busy road near her home where Boone’s car hit her. Minutes later an ambulance rushed her to the hospital, where she was listed in critical condition.
From 11 p.m. to 4 a.m. doctors performed surgery to remove blood from Sharolynn’s brain.
Sharolynn’s grandfather said he has been afraid of losing the child on more than one occasion, but that true to her miracle baby title, once again and despite everything, she’s going to be OK.
“You could say the lord was watching over her,” Macik said.
Sharolynn will be brought out of sedation late Wednesday evening and is expected to recover from her injuries.
