Officer Involved In Natomas Shooting Called A Hero
Published: May 24, 2006
Investigators are trying to piece together events surrounding a shooting at Natomas Marketplace that left one person dead, one injured and a police officer recovering at home from injuries.
Police Chief Albert Najera called the officer involved a hero for risking his life Monday afternoon to protect people in the busy shopping center located at Interstate 80 and Truxel Road.
“It is a real traumatic incident for anybody and for a young officer like that, it’s very tough,” Najera said. “He’s got a lot of things to think about. He’s a principal in a shooting investigation now.”
Najera said the officer at one point found himself on the hood of a red sedan containing four people suspected of taking part in an earlier armed robbery.
The officer drew his revolver and fired several shots into the car, killing one person and injuring another.
Two other people in the car — a man and a woman — fled the scene but were later captured.
The incident began when the officer attempted to confront the people in the car near the In-N-Out Burger restaurant in the shopping center, but the driver accelerated the sedan and struck the officer, police said.
Investigators worked late into the night Monday at the shooting scene. The center was clear Tuesday morning, but a handful of candles sat burning in a makeshift memorial on a curb.
Meanwhile, people were returning to the shopping center to retrieve vehicles trapped in the parking lot during the course of the investigation.
