Dog sniffs out hidden $274,000

Published: May 24, 2006

A Department of Public Safety trooper said a driver’s and passenger’s stories didn’t add up during a traffic stop, and a Clay County canine soon sniffed out more - what appeared to be hundreds of thousands of dollars - in the vehicle, the Sheriff’s Office reported.

It started on the freeway near Texas 148.

DPS Trooper Toby Catlin said he spotted a van speeding on northbound U.S. 287 Tuesday. He got the vehicle pulled over and talked to the driver and the passenger.

Their stories about where they were coming from and where they were going didn’t match, he said, and he got consent to search the vehicle.

That’s when a hidden compartment came to authorities’ attention.

Clay County Deputy Josh Brown took the county’s dog, Clif, to the scene, and Clif indicated that he’d sniffed something out in the compartment.

Clif’s nose led authorities to quite a bit of cash. Investigators found three plastic bags filled with $50 and $100 bills, Lt. J.T. Mitchell said. Investigators placed the three sealed bags with stacks of bills on a table inside the sheriff’s office Tuesday afternoon.

The money added up to an unofficial total of more than $274,000, Mitchell said.

He said the people in the vehicle didn’t have documentation showing where the money came from, and Catlin said they told investigators they didn’t have any knowledge of the money.

Mitchell said federal investigators would also get involved in the investigation.

The two males were detained pending the arrival of federal agents Tuesday, he said.
