31 children rescued from embroidery unit

Published: May 24, 2006

Labour department officials today rescued 31 children from Bihar, from the clutches of two owners of an embroidery unit here.

The children, all under the age of 14, were forced to work for 18 to 20 hours a day by the owners. They were also not provided with proper food, Labour Minister Iqbal Ansari told reporters.

The owners escaped during the raid conducted by the Labour department officials on their unit. The manager of the unit had been taken into custody and would be handed over to the police, he said.

The children, hailing from Sitamarhi district in Bihar, were forced to work in a small garage and only a paltry sum was being sent to their parents once in three or six months by the owners, he said.

Ansari said the children would be sent back to their places after a medical check-up was conducted and the respective district authorities would be contacted.
