News find rescue hero

Published: May 22, 2006

A GOOD Samaritan who helped to save the life of a Whitehaven man who suffered a heart attack in the street has been found.

Following an appeal for the man in last week’s Whitehaven News, Michael Allen, of Cleator Moor, came forward.

Michael Casson, of Brakeside Gardens, is on the road to recovery following the quick actions of Michael, 35, of Coniston Park.

Michael, 54, collapsed and suffered a heart attack in Whitehaven town centre. Michael Casson was first on the scene and was quick to put him in the recovery position and carry out heart compressions.

“I saw the man fall against a lamp post so I rushed over to see if he was alright. He was crouched down and holding his chest. I put him in the recovery position and loosened his clothes,” said Michael, a process worker at Sellafield.

“I did it instinctively, I haven’t had any proper training,” he said. “I just got on with it and I would just hope that someone would do the same for me if I was ever in that position,” he added.

Christine Casson, Michael’s wife, appealed last week in The Whitehaven News for the “mystery lifesaver” to come forward so she could thank him personally.

The Whitehaven News has put them all in touch and they met up last week. As it turned out – Michael Allen and Christine know each other through work at Sellafield – so he’s not a “mystery man” any more!
