Little Boy Reunited with Family
Published: May 22, 2006
A little boy’s desire to see his dad led to some tense moments Monday. The toddler went wandering the streets of Detroit, and was not found until hours later.
It was a long night for 4-year-old RJ. He seemed exhausted and stayed close to Sgt. Angela Gordon as he waited for his family to come and pick him up.
One of the RJ’s close relatives, Maurice Taylor, told 7 Action News, “He was visiting the grandma, and he was looking for dad. Dad had left to go, I guess, whatever. He seen dad leave, and Grandma was asleep, so he was trying to go find dad.”
Taylor and other family members rushed to the police station after hearing news reports that RJ had been found by some strangers. He was picked up at the corner of Gratiot and Fordham, which is reportedly only 2 blocks from the grandmother’s home.
Taylor told 7 Action News, “It was a scary feeling, man. It’s like one of my own, so, yeah, it was scary. It was something that you don’t want to go through yourself.”
7 Action News was told that RJ’s mother and father won’t face any charges.
“They were both surprised,” Sgt. Gordon explained. “I told them, ‘It happens.’ Children do get out, and I’m glad we have a happy ending to it.”
