Policeman opens home, heart to rescued dog

Published: May 20, 2006

A big puppy who’s been through a big adventure has found a new home with a big-hearted Hopewell Township police officer who loves big dogs.

Jim Lewis of Hopewell was very interested when Joe Gerhard of Triangle Pet Control in McKees Rocks told him two weeks ago about a scared Saint Bernard puppy he had rescued from a Findlay Township storm drain, but Lewis thought for sure someone else would claim such a fine dog.

However, Lewis took a chance and put his name in the mix if no one came forward to claim the female pup, who had been on her own for at least several weeks. On Friday, Lewis received the good news in a call from Triangle: Come pick up your puppy.

The young Saint Bernard could have been roaming the woods in the Pittsburgh International Airport area since as long ago as Feb. 27, according to one report, before workers at the Parking Company of America discovered her hiding in a 130-foot-long pipe on May 3 and were able to get her out only by sending a man into the drain.

Lewis said Monday that the approximately 6-month-old puppy he has named Brandy is still timid, but is doing well.

Aiding in her recovery is Bailey, a 3-year-old female Saint Bernard already owned by Lewis who has become like a mother to Brandy.

Lewis is hoping Bailey’s affectionate nature will rub off on Brandy, who was going for her shots and a veterinarian checkup Monday night.

He said Brandy appears to be in good shape other than the ticks she picked up from her time in the wild.

“I believe she is going to be fine,” Lewis said, noting the puppy also is getting along fine with his daughters, ages 4 and 2. “Every day, she seems to be getting more receptive to us.”
