Thank police this week

Published: May 18, 2006

Have you thanked your local law enforcement officers lately? This week is National Police Week, and in recognition, I wanted to remind residents about the important role that your local police, sheriff’s and highway patrolmen and women play in keeping you safe.

As a brief history of how this week started, in 1962 President John F. Kennedy designated the calendar week in which May 15 falls as National Police Week to pay tribute to the law enforcement officers who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our country and to voice our appreciation for all those who currently serve on the front lines of the battle against crime. During the week of May 15, there are ceremonies at the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, D.C., to honor officers who have died in the line of duty.
Consider the following facts:
● The are more than 17,000 federal, state and local law enforcement officers who have died in the line of duty with names engraved on the “Walls of Remembrance.”
● On average, one law enforcement officer is killed in America every 53 hours, and 56,000 law enforcement officers are assaulted each year; 17,000 are injured as a result of these assaults.
So, in light of these facts and National Police Week, I would like to take a moment to recognize our Sahuarita Police Department and thank its members for their contributions and sacrifices for the community. I would also like to ask the public to remember our police officers and appreciate the great work they do for Sahuarita.
In addition to keeping you safe, your local police officers are working hard in the community. This year alone, Sahuarita police officers have given back to the community through projects and initiatives such as the STOP (Sahuarita Team Offers Prevention) Committee’s Annual Grad Nite at Sahuarita High School; Shop with a Cop for needy children during the holiday season; the Law Enforcement Torch Run to raise money for the Special Olympics; and hosting blood drives.
As your new Sahuarita police chief, I wanted to express my commitment to each of you and to this community as a whole. I strongly believe in the concept of community policing, which emphasizes reducing neighborhood crime, helping to reduce fear of crime and enhancing the quality of life in the community. The Sahuarita Police Department will accomplish these items by joining the efforts and resources of the police, local government and community members.
I look forward to meeting you and to working with you.
Best regards,
Chief John W. Harris
Sahuarita Police Department
