Girls cut hair for Locks of Love

Published: May 18, 2006

Two young girls recently braved the blade and got nearly a foot of their hair cut off to donate to Locks of Love, a group that collects hair to make wigs for children and adults with cancer.

Nine-year-old Morgan Burke of Marco Island was the first to come up with the idea.

“A girl at school had her hair cut and donated it,” said Morgan.

Upon hearing about the Locks of Love program, Morgan’s 7-year-old sister Riley decided to do it, too.

“Morgan has been wanting to do this for months but had to wait until her hair was long enough,” said their mother Kim Burke. “Her aunt lost her hair to cancer. That’s part of the reason why she’s doing this.”

The haircuts were done at Rick’s Island Salon & Day Spa.

“We do a lot of Locks of Love haircuts, and they are complementary,” said salon owner Lisa Popoff. “The kids are anxious to help out someone who has lost their hair.”

“I’ve very proud of these two girls,” added stylist Peter Galluzzo, who along with fellow stylist Sasha Popoff performed the cuts.

Both Galluzzo and Popoff gave the girls beautiful, trendy new short hairstyles.

Morgan and Riley Burke gave cancer patients a reason to smile.
