Woman’s check to Dad pays off with Lotto win

A long time ago, Della Nelson wrote her father a check for $1 million — just in case she ever won the lottery. Well, it’s time for daddy to take a trip to the bank.
Nelson arrived in Tallahassee early today to claim Saturday’s Lotto jackpot of about $11 million, state officials said.
The 54-year-old Titusville woman, who bought the winning ticket at the Circle K on Cheney Highway in Titusville, chose to take the one-time lump sum of about $6.1 million.
Nelson couldn’t be reached for comment, but she told lottery officials she was watching television in bed Saturday night when the winning numbers flashed across the screen.
“I almost had a heart attack,” she said in a press release. “I had just got home from the hospital and thought I was going to have to go back.”
When she told her husband, Larry, that she had won, he didn’t believe her, Nelson said. He went on the Florida Lottery’s Web site to confirm the winning numbers: 01-05-12-27-33-52.
The Nelsons told lottery officials they consider themselves a lucky couple. Just last month, they won $4,268.50 playing Lotto and have won money on other lottery games.
Della Nelson is the 31st Florida Lotto winner to purchase a winning ticket in Brevard and the 842nd winner since 1988. “God blessed us with this money for a reason,” she said in the release.
The Nelsons plan to build a new home, buy a new car and pay off some bills.
And, Della Nelson told officials, she plans to make good on that $1 million check.
