Published: May 17, 2006

An “inspirational” Chorley teacher has reached the North West finals of The Teaching Awards.

Phil Wignall, head of maths at Albany Science College, Bolton Road, Chorley, was nominated for the award by a parent.

The Teaching Awards were established by Lord Puttnam CBE in 1998 and are managed by an independent charity, the Teaching Awards Trust, which aims to celebrate excellence and promote best practice in education.

Mr Wignall, who has been at the school for the past 11 years, put his success down to the pupils.

He said: “My teaching reflects the quality of the pupils at the school.

“The only reason I can be the teacher I am is because of them.”

Mr Wignall, 46, has been a teacher for 22 years and still enjoys being in the classroom.

He was nominated for the award by school parent Charlotte Metters whose son is in year ten.

In her nomination Charlotte said: “He is an inspirational teacher and has encouraged my son to excel in maths, a subject in which previously he has lacked confidence.

“He is always positive and seems to take genuine pleasure from his work, which shines through in his results.

“I have been absolutely thrilled with my child’s progress and this award will be well deserved.”

Mr Wignall will hear the result of his nomination when winners are honoured at a gala lunch to be attended by Lord Puttnam in Blackpool next month.
