Dog saves the day
Published: May 17, 2006
A man escaped a burning mobile home thanks to his alert dog.
The little pooch woke his slumbering owner - who slept through buzzing smoke detectors - after Delbert Jensen’s south-side mobile home caught fire yesterday near 45 Street and 76 Avenue.
When firefighters reached the home, around 10:30 a.m., it was already consumed by flames. Fire crews quickly got the blaze under control and extinguished it.
Investigators said the dog woke the man from his slumber and he was able to get out. Neither he nor the dog were injured.
However, a two-metre-long snake died in the blaze.
Investigators discovered the fire occurred as a result of an electrical fault in a hot tub outside the house.
The mobile home sustained $90,000 damage to the building and contents, investigators said. The owner had no insurance and is staying with friends.
