Neighbor hailed as hero after saving 2 kids from burning home

Published: May 12, 2006

A man was being hailed a hero on Thursday for saving two little boys from a burning house, news partner NewsChannel 5 reported..

It happened around 8 this morning at 605 Piedmont Road. Fire Rescue officials believe the fire started in the kitchen.

A neighbor reported seeing some smoke. Jaime Miranda, a neighbor, knocked on the door to see if anyone was home. He found two boys, ages 3 and 5, inside. Miranda then went into the home and rescued the boys.

Both boys were taken to St. Mary’s Medical Center where they were treated for smoke inhalation. The boys are now in state custody.

Police say the two boys are cousins, and the mother of the 5 year-old was supposed to be watching the kids while the 3 year-old’s mother and their grandmother were away.

The 5-year-old’s mother, 23-year-old Miriam Jean, was arrested and will be charged with child neglect. There will be a hearing tomorrow with the Department of Children and Families.

Miranda, called a hero by his neighbors, continued to help the family who lost their home.

He’s now raising money to help the family replace the home that was consumed by the fire.
