Community helps out cat with attitude

A feral cat that spends most of his days slouched on a wine counter in Wellington has had his life saved by the local community - despite the fact he frequently attacks customers.
Barolo thinks he’s the king of Wellington’s Kelburn Village and has chosen the Glengarry wine counter as his throne for the last six years.
“He’s horrible, he’s actually a really awful cat but we kind of love him, you know there’s just something appealing about him,” says Glengarry manager Meredith Parkin.
But when an overactive thyroid condition was diagnosed local residents ran a raffle to raise the $500 needed to treat him.
Two months of high dose of radioactive iodine meant enforced isolation.
But he’s finally been given the all clear.
“He’s good now…safe as, no problems with him at all. He can come home, sleep on people’s beds, he can groom himself,” says Kelburn vet Seton Butler.
Barolo does have his loving moments, but they are usually short lived and Meredith keeps antiseptic ointment on the counter just in case.
