Girl to be Reunited With Parents
Published: May 11, 2006
Detectives from Florida arrived in Marietta, Ga., early Thursday morning to retrieve a 13-year-old girl who was the focus of a nationwide Amber Alert.
The girl disappeared from Windsor, Fla. on Sunday when she went to the restroom while at a blueberry farm with her parents. Police believe she left the farm with 25-year-old Juan Martinez-San Augestino in a green Plymouth van.
Just hours after the Amber Alert was issued and broadcast, an anonymous person called police about 7:30 p.m. Wednesday to say the van with the girl inside it was at a gas station in Marietta. Police rushed to the scene, where Augestino told them the girl was his wife. Officers arrested the suspect and took Marlene Brito into custody.
The Alachua County detectives arrived in Marietta about 4 a.m. Thursday to question the girl about her whereabouts during the four days she was gone. They plan to take her back to Florida.
“The suspect will stay here and we’ll be reuniting the child with the parents,” said Detective Matt Barr with the Alachua County Sheriff’s Dept.
The suspect will be staying in Marietta and will likely have to appear before a judge regarding extradition to Florida.
