Cutting Their Hair For Katie Casey

Their goal was to raise $2000 to donate in honor of a classmate with cancer, but Altoona Middle School students didn’t cut off there. They went on to raise more than twice that. Because the students raised more than $4500, 20 fifth and sixth graders shaved their heads this morning.

Eleven-year-old Katie Carey was diagnosed with a bone cancer in March and is receiving treatment in Marshfield. She says she’s overwhelmed by her classmate’s gesture. “Pretty weird to see everyone like me with their hair gone,” says the fifth grader.

“For these kids to be willing to drastically change their looks in honor of my daughter, it’s very touching,” says Wendy Carey, Katie’s mother.
