Woman reunited with rescuers

Published 26 Apr. 2006

Tammi Whyte knew several people helped save her life and she wanted to find them and say thanks.

Whyte was driving her five-month-old baby to the doctor’s office when she had a seizure. Her car went crashing into a resaca.

Whyte doesn’t remember it, but she and her baby were surrounded by water. Within seconds, people rushed in to help.

Rene Villarreal said, “It was my sense of duty, I guess. God put me here for a reason. God knows very well I wouldn’t let someone drown if I can help it.”

Villarreal had some help from Jose Pizana. Both tried to break the window but couldn’t. Pizana’s cousin, Rolando, brought a lug wrench and broke the glass.

Pizana says he found Whyte’s daughter floating in the water. The baby was not breathing. He said, “I was happy to get the baby out. I have never done that and jumped in the lake without knowing how to swim.”

Then, yet another hero came to the rescue. A woman helped Whyte get out of the car while another man performed CPR on the baby and brought her back to life.

This won’t be the last reunion. The Whyte family plans to hold a special dinner to honor the rescuers.
