Reunited, and it feels so good

Cody had a doggoned tough day on April Fool’s Day.
While on his way to the veterinarian with his owner, Beverly Downs, the black Labrador retriever fell out of her truck and wound up at the Flying J truck stop, miles from his Montgomery County home.
Luckily, Anita Till and her family came to the rescue.
“We stopped for gas,” said Till. “We pulled into the Flying J. I just thought there was a dead dog lying over there. We wondered why all these people were passing this dead dog. (He) was right in the lane where you pull up to pump.”
Though she can look back on the April 1 encounter with the 110-pound dog and smile, she knows it was no laughing matter for the dog’s owner.
While on her way to a veterinarian in Hayneville, Downs crossed railroad tracks and Cody bounced out of the back of her truck.
“I got to the vet and he wasn’t on the back of the truck,” Downs said. “I went knocking on doors in Hayneville. He’s 10-and-a-half years now. I’ve had him since he was six weeks.”
Both Cody and Downs were heartbroken during the week they spent apart. Cody did not eat for nearly two days. At the truck stop, passersby tried to feed him, but he was apparently too depressed to eat the burgers and hotdogs people offered.
“He’d been there all day,” Till said. “We just coaxed him to come with us. He hung out at my mom’s house. He was just heartbroken.”
After a week of searching for her lost dog, Downs placed a classified advertisement in the Bulletin Board, and got a phone call from Till she won’t soon forget.
“When she started describing him she got so excited,” Till said. “I started to think, ‘Yeah. I’ve probably got your dog.’”
Downs went to the Tills’ home in Butler County to reunite with her lost pal.
“He just about knocked her over when she got out of the car,” Till said. “She was one happy person to get her dog. It’s just a simple story — kind of odd, with a happy ending.”
