Boy’s miracle recovery baffles doctors

Published: April 26, 2006

An eight-week-old baby has puzzled medical professionals. This after making a miracle recovery from injuries sustained during a fire at his home in rural KwaZulu-Natal.

Sindiswa Mhlongo was four weeks-old when a candle in his home fell and set the place alight. Sindiswa was rushed to Manguzi Hospital and resusitated. He was then airlifted by the South African Red Cross Air Mercy Services to a hospital in Durban. Doctors thought he wasn’t going to survive and sent him back to Manguzi.

But that has not stopped Sindiswa’s fighting spirit. Today he has recovered but contractions in his mouth and ears may mean other deformities. The boy’s mother is unemployed, has three other children at home and will be unable to pay for the extensive reconstructive surgery and therapy needed to help Sindiswa’s recovery.

Specialist surgery will mean the boy might spend the next year or two in hospital.
