Possible Cure for Type 1 Diabetes
Published: April 25, 2006
The scientists at the La Jolla Institute for Allergy and Immunology (LIAI) have made a major finding in the majority of the laboratory mice they have tested that may reverse the onset of type 1 diabetes.
This study of laboratory mice combines two therapies (a particular antibody and a proinsulin peptide). The combination of these therapies has shown better efficiency with longer lasting results and less side effects in mice than the current human studies in which each individual therapy has been conducted in humans so far.
The antibody being used in these clinical trials has shown a reversal of recent onsets of human type 1 diabetes that lasted for more than a year.
According to Dr. Matthias von Herrath, who is recognized as an international expert in the molecular basis of type 1 diabetes, this combinational treatment using a vaccine strategy is a first in trying to cure type 1 diabetes.
Dr. von Herrath also said, “The diabetes never reoccurred in the lifespan of the mice.”
Researchers are hopeful in taking the steps to reach a cure for type 1 diabetes. They are currently making plans to begin testing this combination therapy on humans in clinical trials later this year.
