Baby chicks rescued

Three baby chicks abandoned at Lake Waterford Park were rescued when they were discovered by two young boys and their mother just days after Easter.
The chicks came walking right up to twins Timothy and Frances Zyla while they were in the Pasadena park last week, said John Marshall, the county’s chief of park operations. The twins’ mother notified the ranger at the park before taking the chicks home. The family plans to take care of them until they can be transported to an area farm.
“This happens every Easter,” Mr. Marshall said. “People drop off chicks and baby ducks, and they think they will be fine, but nine out of 10 times they aren’t fine.”
Easter is a particularly popular occasion to give baby chicks, bunnies and ducklings as presents, he said, but what seems like a cute gift for a child turns out to be a burden for many people.
Often these domestic animals end up in environments where they have difficultly or can’t survive, and most of the time they fall prey to hawks, foxes and other carnivores, he said.
Mr. Marshall said it’s illegal and inhumane to drop off animals in Anne Arundel County parks.
