Toronto police have arrested a 34-year-old woman after a four-year-old boy was abducted from a shopping mall food court.
Joshiah (Dejon) Madurie was found unharmed Sunday after a provincewide Amber Alert was initiated following his Saturday afternoon disappearance.
A 61-year-old family friend, who is a grandfather figure to Joshiah, regularly meets friends at the Albion Mall, in the city’s west end, and brought the little boy along.
In the food court, the man noticed an unknown woman circling his table, police said. Figuring the woman was hungry, he asked if she wanted some money to buy some food, Det. Colin Kay said.
The woman joined them to eat and the man asked his friends at a neighbouring table to watch Joshiah while he went to check the winning lottery numbers at a nearby kiosk, Kay said.
When he returned, the boy and the woman were gone.
Police issued video surveillance of the woman and Joshiah walking out, hand-in-hand.
On Sunday morning, a caretaker with the Toronto Transit Commission saw a suspicious woman and a little boy in the restroom of a subway station, Kay said.
“The woman appeared to be putting something in the child’s mouth and he seemed to be resisting,” he said.
Police believe the woman may have been giving the boy sedatives. The caretaker called police, who then arrived to arrest the woman and return the boy to his mother.
