Jackson Teacher Receives National Honor
Published: April 22, 2006
With so much attention on test scores, it’s refreshing to see a teacher get recognized for her hard work in getting students to enjoy the learning process. At Pecan Park Elementary in Jackson, one educator just received another award for a job well done.
The students waited patiently in the cafeteria, and Pecan Park Elementary principal Wanda Quon swore them to secrecy.
“She doesn’t know about any of this, so when she walks through the door I want you to show her how exited and proud you are of her,” urged Quon.
Then the moment came. Math and science teacher Peggy Carlisle has become one of only five teachers in the country this year and the first teacher ever in Mississippi to be inducted into the National Teachers Hall of Fame. This means she’s one of the best teachers in the United States.
“I looked at the role of people who are in the hall of fame and I am in awe that you would select me,” she expressed.
Carlisle is certainly a celebrated teacher here in Jackson. Last April she received a prestigious award from the National Science Teachers Association. She teaches hand-on science lessons. Here, her students are digging chocolate chips out of cookies posing as fossils. They’re also getting hands-on lessons in prehistoric animal life, and they’re enjoying the learning process.
“She helps us get real science things and lets us do experiments with them, make them very fun and easy to do,” said one of her students.
Then last September Carlisle won the top national Unsung Hero Award for her work on the Kenyan Project, which introduced students to life in another country. But her latest honor tops them all. Carlisle says it’s no secret many teachers get discouraged when they can’t get through to students. She recommends those educators to go through the national board process to refresh their mind and teaching style.
“It turned my practice around because you focus more on impact of student learning than what is in textbooks,” she stated.
Carlisle went through an application process to earn the hall of fame achievement. In June, she will attend induction ceremonies in Kansas and Washington , D.C.
