Firefighter Arrives At Scene Of Accident, Rescues Daughter

Volusia County firefighter raced to the scene of an accident and found his own daughter trapped in the wreckage.
Daytona Beach Firefighter John Garcia arrived at the accident on Clyde Morris Boulevard and Dunn Avenue on Thursday night. When he takes off on a call from Fire Station #4 in Daytona Beach, he never knows what to expect.
“We got a call for a multiple vehicle accident that had seven cars,” he explained.
Garcia pulled up to a mess and very quickly he realized that he recognized what was left of a little red Mustang, his daughter’s car.
That’s when I realized my daughter was involved in the accident,” he said.
His 17-year-old daughter, Ashley, was trapped inside. But even though she was wedged inside and couldn’t see out, she knew her dad would come for her.
“I was very relieved. I was actually hoping for my dad to be there,” she said.
But getting his daughter out of the car was another matter. They had to cut her out. Garcia tried to keep his composure, trying to be a firefighter first and dad second.
“She was crying and saying, ‘Dad, help me.’ You’re a father. At that point you need to put your emotions behind you,” Garcia said.
“My dad was trying to calm me down and they were trying to find a way to get me out,” Ashley explained.
Every second seemed an eternity, as they cut the car away from Ashley. But, she said, she wasn’t scared. Her dad, after all, is a hero.
“I was in a lot of pain, but I felt pretty safe,” she said.
Ashley Garcia suffered only minor injuries. She is at home recovering. Her father will have one more day to recoup and then he’s back on the job.
